Sindh: 170 illegal blood banks sealed in 2015

KARACHI: Provincial Minister Health Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar on Monday said that a crackdown was going on against illegal blood banks. In 2015, 26 illegal blood banks were sealed off, while during last four years 170 illegal blood banks were closed.

This he said while presiding over a meeting here in his office. Secretary Health Dr Saeed Ahmed Mangnejo and Secretary Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority Dr Zahid Ansari also attended the meeting.

The Health Minister was informed in the meeting that presently, 157 registered blood banks were functioning in the province, out of which 43 were under government. Health minister directed secretary SBTA to make the registration criteria strict. Transparency should be maintained because it was the matter of human lives and credentials of pathologists and other staff working at blood banks must be verified.

Dr Zahid Ansari while briefing the health minister informed that the registration fee had been increased and now it was Rs 30,000 while renewal fee was Rs10 thousands. The meeting was told that there were 85 blood banks in Karachi while 72 blood banks were functioning in other districts of Sindh.

Mehtab directed DHOs and director health to coordinate with SBTA and to take action against illegal blood banks. He said provision of safe blood is the responsibility of Sindh health department. Supplier of illegal and unsafe blood is a crime against humanity and timely action can curb them and we have to come up to the expectations of the people.

On this occasion, Secretary SBTA Dr Zahid Ansari presented annual performance report to the health minister.
