SHC issues notice to DIGP, SSP in detention case

KARACHI: Sindh High Court SHC on Thursday issued a notice to Deputy Inspector General of Police DIGP West, senior superintendent of police SSP west and a sub inspector on a petition seeking action against SSP and other police officials allegedly unlawfully detaining a citizen.

A division bench of SHC comprising Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi issued a notice to the respondents DIG west, SSP west, Shahjahan Khan and sub inspector Noorullah on a petition filed by Muhammad Imran.

The petitioner stated that sub inspector Noorullah picked him up from his residence on July 17 and detained him at Saeedabad police station.

He stated that: “I was first taken to Baldia police station and then to Ittehad Town police station. Then, I was taken to SSP west office, where I was asked to pay back Rs 950,000 that my younger brother Ashfaq had borrowed from them.”

He said that police officials kept him in illegal detention for 15 hours and tortured him. He prayed to the court to direct the authorities concerned to initiate an inquiry against the SSP and the SI for harassing and torturing him in the illegal custody.
