SHC orders Sindh govt to deposit Rs500mn each month for KMC salaries

Karachi: The Sindh High Court SHC on Wednesday ordered provincial authorities to deposit Rs 500million Grant-in-aid with the Nazir of the court before 10th of each month so that salaries to the KMC employees can be paid on time.

During the hearing of petitions seeking payments of salaries to the workers of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation KMC, a division bench headed by Chief Justice Mushir Alam ordered that any violation of its orders would be considered contempt of court. It also directed provincial government to deposit instalment of this month within seven days.

The court said that on receipt of the amount, same may be transmitted to KMC for disbursement of salaries and pension benefits. Earlier, Sajjan and others had moved the court over delays in payment of salaries to more than 50,000 employees of the KMC and the fire department.

The court said that counsel appearing on behalf of KMC had recorded the statement that garbage in city would be collected and measures be initiated in this regard. It observed that it appears that such undertaking has not been adhered to. Therefore, it directed senior director sanitation, KMC to appear in person to explain cause of piling up garbage. It directed KMC to place on the record list of vehicles and sanitation staff.
