Zardari to perform ground-breaking of new SMIU campus

KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari will perform the ground-breaking of new Sind Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) campus in Education City of Karachi next week. The President will also lay foundation stone of SMIU Tower comprising 15 floors where new 15 departments of the university will be run.

The Sindh government has given 100 acres of land to SMIU for its new campus in Education City free of cost where the initial construction work will be started after the ground-breaking ceremony.

SMIU Vice Chancellor Mohammad Ali Shaikh has said that the provincial government had given 100 acres of land to the Alma Mater of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah free of cost similar to the land which was given to Sind Madressatul Islam by Karachi Municipality free of cost in 1885.

The land given to SMIU exists in the end of Education City from where the area of DHA Phase 9 starts, Dr Shaikh informed.

He said that SMIU had already been taken possession of the land from the provincial government, where the work of survey and demarcation had also been completed.

Dr Shaikh said that more than 10 new departments would be opened in the new campus of SMIU. Apart from it, a medical college, engineering college, SMIU Hospital and hostels for local and foreign students, and flats for the university employees would be constructed.

Giving details about SMIU Tower, Dr Shaikh said SMIU’s present plot where the city campus and two model schools are being run is spread over eight and half acres of land, hence, SMIU had planned to build a tower comprising 15 floors on its extended plot located at a distance of few meters from the present historic building of SMIU.

He said other high-rise buildings including Habib Bank Plaza, Techno City and CNBC Building, also exit in the vicinity of SMIU, hence, the university has decided to use its abundant piece of land for the university purpose by constructing a new building on it.

Shaikh said that the building tower would be added to SMI after 16 years as the last building was added into it in 1997, and that was the building of present Girls Model School of SMIU.

The vice chancellor said that uniqueness of SMIU is that it is the only public sector university which is located in the centre of the city and it covers areas of Clifton, Defence, Saddar, Keamari, Garden and other adjoining localities.
