111 profiteers fined, four jailed

KARACHI: In a crackdown on profiteers, 111 shopkeepers were charged with Rs 49800 fine for selling commodities above government rates, while four others were jailed.

Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities were sold at fixed rates.

He further said that city administration had focused those areas where complaints against price hike were received. These areas included Saddar, Garden, SITE, Baldia, Orangi, Ferozabad, Jamshed Quarters, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Model Colony, Bin Qasim and Korangi.

In the crackdown, nine flour sellers, 43 milkmen, 15 shopkeepers of general commodities, 25 chicken sellers, 10 vegetable sellers and nine fruit sellers were fined for selling essential items at excessive prices, while four persons were sent to jail for continuous violation of official rates.
