318 degrees awarded at Greenwich University’s 11th Convocation

KARACHI: Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, renowned scientist, has urged graduates of Greenwich University to contribute to development of the country through their educational skills.

“I urge you all to make best use of your knowledge acquired at the university,” Khan said in his key note address at the 11th Convocation of Greenwich University. Khan said path to success is only achievable through persistent efforts and hard work. He also shared the journey of his life with the graduates and their families.

He stressed on the fact to give more weightage to morality and ethics. He also suggested that the Higher Education Commission should introduce these subjects at college and university level. “We need to teach our students about moralities,” he elaborated.

Dr Qadeer stressed that the application of knowledge is the real key to success not the degree itself. A total of 318 degrees were awarded to 183 undergraduates, 129 graduates, 5 MPhil and 1 Ph.D. degrees. Twenty-two gold medals were also given to exceptional candidates from each department.

Chairman HEC Dr Mukhtar Ahmed said that we need to produce good human beings instead of simple doctors, engineers and business graduates. He spoke on length to elaborate expansion of higher education in the country. He said in 2000, there were only 800 research papers published in international journals, which now surged to over 12000 per annum. He also said that the number of doctors also increased tremendously. On the occasion, Greenwich University has conferred Honoris Causa PhD degree, which is the highest academic honor conferred upon by Greenwich University to extra-ordinary individuals recognized for their outstanding achievements in their respective fields.

Honoris Causa PhD degree was awarded to SardarYasin Malik, Chairman, Hilton Pharma; Ms. Sultana Siddiqui, Chairman, HUM TV Network; and Sirajuddin Aziz, CEO & President, Habib Metropolitan Bank). Until now, Honoris Causa PhD degree has been awarded to Prof Dr.Rafat Karim (Late), Prof Dr. Masood Hameed Khan, Prof Dr. Riad Ismat, Dr. Hameed Haroon and Dr. Abdul Sattar Edhi and Her Excellency, Ms. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, President, The Republic of Mauritius.

Chancellor of Greenwich University, Ms. Seema Mughal emphasized, that the aim of the university is not only to prepare students for a better future for themselves but also for a brighter Pakistan.

She said Greenwich has been working progressively on its mission for the last three decades and has already crossed many mile stones in the process. “I still remember the first convocation when 46 students graduated and today 300 plus graduates clearly represent the progress we have made over the years”, she remarked.

“Our ambition is not to be the best and good management school in Karachi-Pakistan, but to be one of the best globally”, she said. In this connection, the Chancellor said Greenwich has opened a campus in Mauritius this year. Mauritius holds a crucial position in African continent and we hope to play a vital role ensuring improved educational opportunities for everyone in that region. Greenwich University is the only recognized university from South Asia in Mauritius.

She said entering in the market of Mauritius has political and economic importance for Pakistan. “This venture will surely generate foreign exchange for the Pakistan under the head of export of services. Politically important since we have entered into a market which in the past have been dominated by others”, the chancellor remarked.

Written messages of President of Pakistan and Prime Minister of Pakistan were also red out at the convocation. On this occasion, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in his written message for the university graduates stressed that the role of education is primary in maintaining a free society. President of Pakistan also congratulated Greenwich University for its consistent efforts in making the institution one of the leading ones not only in Pakistan but internationally as well.

Greenwich University also carries a unique tradition of Platform Party that comprises some of the most respectable and outstanding members of the society. For year 2015, the platform party members include Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, SM Muneer (Chairman, Din Group of Companies, Deepak Perwani, Dr Hameed Haroon CEO Dawn Media Group, Salman Iqbal CEO ARY Network along with some other distinguished and renowned members.
