50 illegal blood banks seized in 2014

Karachi: Special Secretary Public Health, Department of Health Sindh, Dr Khalid Sheikh, on Wednesday was briefed in performance based presentation by the different programs and projects heads run by Health Department Sindh at Sindh Secretariat.

The briefing was organized on the directive of Health Minister Sindh in which different projects’ heads presented the performance report to special secretary public health. The heads of Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA), Sindh Nutrition Program, Sindh AIDS Control Program and Malaria Control Program briefed the special secretary.

Secretary Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA) Dr Zahid Hassan Ansari in his presentation informed that 50 unauthorized blood banks had been seized in operation cleanup in Sindh province in 2014. He said SBTA had successfully closed the 148 blood banks through the province so far.

He claimed that no any illegal blood bank existed in the province after operation cleanup. He said voluntary blood donation was not increased as expected. He stressed the need for motivating the people to enhance voluntary blood donation in the country.
