600 vacant posts of doctors make many JPMC depts non-functionalJanuary 9, 2015
KARACHI: The nephrology department at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JMPC) has closed its emergency and OPD services due to the unavailability qualified doctors, sources at the JPMC told PPI news agency on Saturday.
They said all the new patients with kidney problems, treatment of kidney problems and renal replacement therapy (dialysis and kidney transplantation) surgery requirements are being referred to other hospitals due to the lack of qualified doctors in the department. They said that the department presently is only catering those patients who have already been admitted.
They said due to the unavailability of professors, assistant professors, doctors and paramedical staff the various departments of JPMC including kidney, skin, plastic surgery and chest surgery have been closed or non-functional for last four years. They said over 600 posts of doctors, paramedics and nursing staff at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) have been lying vacant for the past few years due to incompetence and lethargy of bureaucracy.
They said there are total 28 departments in the JPMC and only five are being run by professors, while the rests of departments were being run by assistant professors. About a dozen departments are being run by a single doctor each. A good number of professors and assistant professors have retired from their posts and some other had left the country for better future in last few years.
They said patients are facing immense problems due to the dearth of specialist doctors in the hospital, but tug of war between provincial health department Sindh and JPMC administration has brought one of the best health institutions of the country to verge of collapse.
Joint Executive Director & In-charge Emergency Department, Dr Seemin Jamali, when contacted, said health department Sindh has approved leaves of nephrology and bio-chemistry professors without the consent of JPMC administration. Resultantly, performance of these two deportments has been partially disturbed. However, the OPD service is continuing in nephrology department, she explained. She further said Skin Diseases Ward and Plastic Sugary Department are also fully operating in hospital.
