Acting President: (Rabbani says Pakistan rendered great sacrifices by hosting Afghan refugees)

ISLAMABAD: Acting President Mian Raza Rabbani on Wednesday said that Pakistan has rendered great sacrifices in fight against terrorism and also in hosting the Afghan refugees.

He emphasized that the country is committed in eliminating the scourge of terrorism. He expressed these views while talking to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and former Portuguese Prime Minister Mr. Antonio Guterres, who called on him along with a delegation here at Aiwan-e-Sadr.

Federal Minister for SAFRON Lt Gen Abdul Qadir Baloch, Secretary SAFRON Pir Bakhsh Jamali and Dr. Imran Zeb, Chief Commissioner for Afghan Refugees were also present on the occasion.

The Acting President said that Operation Zarb-e-Azb against terrorism has the complete backing of the entire nation and of the whole political leadership of the country noting that national consensus on this critical issue is producing positive results.

He emphasized that international community particularly western countries should understand the difficulties of Pakistan in this matter. He said Pakistan is ready to extend all out support for repatriation of Afghan refugees to their homeland and their rehabilitation inside Afghanistan. In this regard, cooperation and support extended by international community and UNHCR is quite commendable, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Mr. Antonio Guterres said that Pakistani nation demonstrated great courage and patience despite trying circumstances for which they deserve immense admiration. He said Pakistan has adopted an effective strategy for fighting terrorism and it is producing encouraging results.

He also acknowledged the efforts made by Pakistan for hosting the world’s largest refugee population for more than three decades.
