Acting Speaker leads NA delegation to 133rd Assembly of IPU being held in Geneva

ISLAMABAD: Acting Speaker National Assembly Murtaza Javed Abbasi is leading a parliamentary delegation to the 133rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) being held from October 17-21, 2015 at Geneva, Switzerland.

The delegation comprises members of National Assembly of Pakistan that include Mohammad Raza Hayat Harraj, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, Shabbir Ali Bijarani, Ms. Shirin M. Mazari, Makhdoomzada Basit Bukhari and Dr. Ibadullah.

The delegation will participate in the Assembly of the IPU and its related meetings. The delegation will also meet their counterparts from the IPU member states on sidelines of the Assembly and exchange views and experiences.

According to a press statement issued here on Wednesday, the IPU Assembly would conduct a general debate on the theme “The moral and economic imperative for fairer, smarter and more humane migration,” and additionally would converse upon the topic “Democracy in the digital era and the threat to privacy and individual freedoms”.

The participants would also deliberate on reports of the standing committees on peace and international security; sustainable development, finance and trade; and on United Nations affairs.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and co-operation among people and for the firm establishment of representative democracy. The IPU Parliamentary Assembly is held annually in one of the member countries. The venue and the agenda are decided in the preceding meeting of the Assembly.
