Administrator directs to crackdown on gutka

KARACHI: Administrator Karachi Rauf Akhter Farooqui directed on Tuesday that food and quality control department should take strict action against gutka manufacturers and shopkeepers.

“The food department should also play an active role to provide citizens quality hygienic food and inspect the hotels, restaurants and food manufacturing factories in this regard,” he said this while addressing a meeting with the officers of quality and control department at his office. Senior director of the department, Mukhtar Hussain, was also present on the occasion.

Hussain told the meeting that more than 400 hotel owners were given notices to standardize kitchen, bathroom, utensils and cleanliness. While, 350 challans had been presented in the courts on which they had to be fined or punished.

He told that maunds of gutka was seized in the city which would be set on fire very soon in front of media.

Meanwhile, the administrator said that food license fees would also increase the revenue of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) which would be helpful to provide more facilities to the citizens.

“The food department had been given no attention for a long time in the past, but now it has been reorganized. It is need of the hour that officers and workers perform an active role in this regard so that citizens could feel that steps are being taken to provide them hygienic food,” he said.

Farooqui said that gutka needed no laboratory test to prove to be hazardous for health that was why immediate action should be taken against its manufacturing and selling.

Farooqui directed that food and quality control department should raid along city wardens wherever gutka was being manufactured.

“Interior department of government of Sindh would be requested to give senior director and director special magisterial authorities so that they could take action against adulteration and announce punishment for them on the spot,” he said.
