Administrator seek joint efforts to curb dengue, NaegleriaJuly 15, 2014
Karachi: Administrator Karachi Rauf Akhtar Farooqui on Wednesday said curbing the dengue and Naegleria in comprehensive manner is the joint responsibility of society as this matter is linked to live and health of citizens.
He expressed these views while reviewing the steps taken to control dengue and Naegleria diseases in a meeting held at Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Building here. Commissioner Metropolitan Sajjad Hussain Abbasi, Sr Director Municipal Services Masood Alam, Senior Director Health & Medical Services Dr Salma Kausar and other officials were also present on this occasion.
He said the government departments were striving to eliminate dengue and Naegleria diseases, while on other hand, were also creating awareness in public. He urged the District Municipal Corporation (DMCs) to ensure cleanliness in their towns in order to prevent people from diseases.
Rauf urged all concerned municipals departments to devise a comprehensive strategy to curb the fatal diseases in collaboration with other relevant departments. He instructed the district municipal corporation officials to ensure the dumping of garbage and its disposal in order to prevent diseases spread.
He stressed the need for lunching a mass level public awareness campaign to avoid dangerous viral disease Naegleria fowleri through media. He said that disease could be avoided through preventive measures. He informed that the KMC had started cleansing swimming pools and conducting chlorination of water under precautionary measures in city.
Senior Director Health & Medical Services Dr Salma Kausar informed that KMC had started efforts to save infants and pregnant women from dengue disease. She said Health Department Sindh and World Health Organization were also assisting the KMC in this regard. She stressed the need of organizing seminars, talk shows and lectures to eliminate dengue and Naegleria.
She said taking sample collection of water were also underway from different parts of city to prevent from Naegleria disease. She said KMC had adopted four methods to control the prevalence of disease including social awareness, biological control, fumigation and provision of treatment facilities.
