KARACHI: The police on Saturday submitted the report of Joint Investigation Team (JIT) in a local court, stating that Baldia town factory fire was not an accident but it was an act of arson by the members of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).

The fresh JIT report submitted in the Additional District & Sessions Court gave clean chit to rebel MQM leader Anees Qaimkhani, who was being considered as the main accused previously, by excluding his name from the new report.

According to JIT report, MQM members including Hammad Siddiqui, a former in-charge of MQM’s Karachi Tanzeemi Committee, were behind fire incident.

The report also recommended the nomination of four other suspects including Rehman Bhola, a former MQM’s sector in-charge, and Hammad Siddiqui.

According to report, Hammad Siddiqui had demanded extortion of Rs 200 million from the factory owners. The Investigation Officer stated that since the elements of extortion and arson have been revealed during the inquiry, a new case should be registered under Anti-Terrorism Act.

The court expressed its displeasure over the IO for not arresting the absconding accused, Mansoor, and issued non-bailable warrants against him. The court adjourned the hearing of the case till 22nd March.

At least 259 people were burnt alive in inferno in Ali Enterprises Garments Factory in Baldia Town Karachi on 11th September 2012.
