At least 30 die as heavy downpour lashes Punjab, AJK

LAHORE: At least thirty people including three security personnel, women and children, died in separate incidents of roof collapse, land sliding and electrocution followed by heavy downpour in Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

Three security personnel were killed in land sliding in Azad Kashmir. However, the met office has issued urgent directions to citizens, prohibiting them to travel in Azad Jammu and Kashmir area due to heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed Lahore city where six members of a family lost their lives in a roof collapse incident, including an infant.

In another incident of roof collapse in Government Officers Residence (GOR) Colony, two people died in rain-related mishaps. Separately, a man died after getting electric shocks in Johar Town area.

Several deaths were also reported from Sialkot, Faisalabad and Gujranwala cities of Punjab. According to rescue sources, a woman and two children died when house wall collapsed on them in Sialkot.

Two more deaths were also reported from Faisalabad, while in Monki area of Gujranwala, a child died and two other persons were injured in roof collapse incident.

The government of Punjab has declared emergency in the rain-hit areas and launched full-scale rescue operations.
