Bringing smile to faces more important than winning Nobel: PfauOctober 24, 2014
KARACHI: Winning Nobel Peace Prize or any other award had never been important to her but bringing smiles to the faces of people was, said Dr Ruth Pfau, who has dedicated her life for more than 50 years to eradicate leprosy from Pakistan.
She said this while addressing as a chief guest to the gathering at the event “Tribute to Celebrity Senior Citizens” organized by Institute of Business Management (IoBM) students of Public Relation & Media Management Department at IoBM Auditorium on Saturday.
On her trip to India in 1960 Dr Ruth Pfau had to incidentally stay in Karachi due to some visa issue where she encountered leprosy affected people so she got depressed and on the spot resolved to help the people. Pfau embraced the people whom not even their family liked to let stay in their houses, and they were compelled to beg for their lives.
Afterwards many volunteers joined her from different countries, especially, Pakistani Dr Zarina Fazalbhoy has been very well supporting throughout her journey. They both raised the issue of growing leprosy disease at the governmental level.
“If we do not work hard and not be tolerant then we would not be able to make a developed country,” said Pfau, who also expressed her deep affection with Pakistan and said: “I must say I have enjoyed Pakistan very much.”
Advising the young generation, she said life was always beautiful so never let go any moment without enjoying it. If you did not feel life to be wonderful then you should work to make it wonderful for others as well.
Pervaiz Jamil, the advisor of the PR department of IoBM, termed the work of Dr Pfau a divine motivational dedication and said he did not have word above divine to describe her work.
“Just google leprosy to know what it is then you would truly say Assalam-o-alaikum to Dr Ruth Pfau,” he said.
Renowned playwright Haseena Moin said they as senior citizens had performed their responsibilities. So, the burden of responsibilities was being handed over to youth and they should stand up for it to take it as a challenge and enlighten the name of their country.
“We must always respect our parents, because nobody could pay back to his parents what they have done for their children,” Moin said.
A documentary on the magical healing journey of Dr Ruth Pfau in Pakistan was showed. In another movie made by the IoBM students many celebrity senior people were interviewed who shared their experiences and difficulties and success stories then advised students to work hard to achieve success.
Sarim Burney, Professor Manzoor Khalidi of PAF KIET University, Ansaruddin Syed PhD Mathematics, IoBM faculty members and alumni were also present.
