Capacity development of agriculture servicesSeptember 2, 2014
Islamabad: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in collaboration with National Agriculture Research Centre (NARC) and the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) launched a technical cooperation project “Capacity Development of Agriculture Extension Services in KP Province”.
The project is started under JICA’s cooperation for stabilization and development of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border areas. Under the Project, Agriculture Poly-technique Institute (API) at NARC will train 100 Agriculture Officers & Subject Matter Specialists and 250 Field Assistants of Directorate of Agriculture Extension (KP) for 3-5 weeks practical training.
Necessary equipment will be provided to Agriculture Poly-technique Institute (API) at NARC to strengthen its capacity. For the effective dissemination of knowledge about new agricultural practices, and farming techniques to farmers, JICA will also provide equipment to 25 Model Farms Service Centers in KP province.
For the awareness and dissemination of the agriculture extension knowledge to farmers, radio programs will be broadcasted in KP province in which renowned agriculture experts will provide information on modern method of agriculture production, besides some brochures will also be provided to trainees as a reference material
Kawasaki while speaking at signing ceremony highlighted that agriculture is the major source of livelihoods in Pakistan particularly in KP province. Agriculture and livestock combined provide livelihoods to 83% of the people living in rural areas and contribute 21% to provincial GDP and engage more than 36% of the labour force of KP.
He further mentioned that through JICA assisted project the capacity of Agriculture Extension staff of the KP province will be strengthened, which will improve extension services for farmers and ultimately increase the agriculture productivity and farmer’s income. This will also contributes in the livelihood improvement, economic growth, poverty reduction and food security in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
