CM shows concern over target killing of Sikhs

Peshawar: The KP govt despite controlling the terrorism and improvement in law and order situation showed concern over certain incidents of target killing of Sikh community and abduction of citizens and hence termed it a challenge for Police and Home department.

For the purpose besides making decisions for some concrete steps, it also gave free hand to law enforcing agencies. In this respect Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has also reaffirmed the strong commitment of his govt for ensuring peace and tranquillity in the province at all costs saying that serious measures are being taken in this regard.

He was presiding over a high level meeting regarding law and order situation here in CM Secretariat on Tuesday. Those who attended included Advisor to CM on Minority Affairs Sardar Soran Singh, Parliamentary Secretary for P&D, Mian Khaleeq-ur-Rehman, Chief Secretary Amjad Ali Khan, Secretary Home, Syed Akhtar Ali Shah, Secretary P&D, IG Police Nasir Khan Durrani, Commissioner Peshawar and Additional IG Special Branch.

The authorities concerned presented reports about law and order situation, steps taken, future strategies and the incumbent challenges in this regard. Pervez Khattak said that the province was facing three big challenges of target killing, abduction and extortion wherein the govt and law enforcing agencies had to adopt proactive measures.

He underlined the need for proper steps on certain crucial issues to ensure peace that included extraordinary measures for Muharram, checking hate literature and wall chalking, settling boundary dispute with Gilgit Baltistan, recycling of Afghan Refugees and eliminating Afghan Sims in the province that he said were directly affecting the law and order situation in the province.

He said that non-interference and induction of good people in police force have increased its respect and reputation that was also acknowledged by the Army Chief during his meeting with him that he said was a matter of pride for it.

He said Counter Terrorism Department, Counter Kidnap Cell have been established to check such incidents including the target killing while more proactive steps would be taken for saving the precious lives of our citizens including the Sikh and other minorities.

He while taking notice of the growing incidents of target killing, kidnapping for ransom and particularly extortion stressed need for taking effective measures by the Department of Home, Police and political agents. For this purpose, he also directed taking of result-oriented steps under an organized strategy.

Terming the decade long lawlessness as basic reason of these crimes, he stressed need for collective efforts for guaranteeing security in the province and said that durable peace is the only way forward towards economic uplift.

He said that they not only wanted peace in Pakistan, but also in the brotherly Islamic neighbour Afghanistan and whole region. He said that the provincial government for abolition of lawlessness and prevention of target killing in the province is not only utilizing administrative, but also political and diplomatic means.

However, he said that all concerned departments should have to exhibit positive response for ensuring law and order in the province. He said that for this purpose, departments are being provided all required resources and powers.

Pervez Khattak said that Safe City Project based on latest technology was being launched that would turn the entire Peshawar district including city, cantonment and industrial estate into cradle of peace and tranquillity.

He asserted that even a minor crime would then become impossible what to think about target killing, abduction and extortion bids. He directed for accelerating work on this important project. He deplored that linkage of the long borders of our province with FATA and adjoining war turn neighbouring country Afghanistan has become a negative aspect for us but we had to combat challenges through foolproof security arrangements all over the province.

He further assured that completion of Safe City Project, installation of CCTV camera in the city under central command, establishment of forensic science laboratories, cybercrime section, computerization of police and home department and restricting the movements of Afghan refugees would help a great deal in improving the law & order situation in the province especially in the provincial metropolis.

Pervez Khattak regretted that the rampant trends of corruption and inability in govt departments especially in police, special branch and intelligence agencies during the past regimes, also paved way for terrorist and criminal elements to infuse in the folds of the people besides causing other evils. However he said that the era of bad governance was over then.

“Now all the govt departments including police have started work on a new dimension of showing performance”, he added. He said that his govt has guaranteed the heads of police and all other public sector organizations that there would no political interference with a simple condition of delivering to the masses.

He assured the Sikh traders community that our police force would come up to the expectation of the people and would control all the crimes and unrest issues in the province. He said that we all have to live here and we have to make this province a heaven for coming generations whereas we have to work hard for trade, commerce and industrial growth and economic prosperity over here.
