Commissioner directs to ensure safe travelling for school kidsAugust 17, 2014
KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has directed the concerned officials to take effective steps to ensure that school transports meet the requirement of safety in order to provide safe travelling to school children.
He said this while addressing a meeting with District Regional Transport Authority Board (DRTAB) at his office. It was decided in the meeting that fitness of the school transports would be examined thoroughly to keep it up to the mark.
The commissioner directed the secretary district regional transport authority to initiate action against the transports that were not fulfilling the safety requirements and also bring school administration on board on the issue of children’s safe travelling.
It was also decided that traffic police should ensure that drivers of school transports were well-trained and conversant of traffic rules.
Siddiqui also asked the secretary to initiate actions against violators in coordination with the traffic police. The meeting also decided that the senior director of transport and communication department of KMC would make a plan to suggest the steps to bring uniformity in the school buses, for example colour them yellow, and to make them visible on the roads as per modern standard being practiced in the developed countries.
Secretary DRTAB told the meeting that 15000 permits were issued to the vehicles during the last four month.
The secretary also informed that 100 buses were challaned for using sub-standard cylinders which did not meet the safety requirements. The commissioner directed the secretary DRTA to continue crackdown against the buses that were using sub-standard cylinders in coordination with the traffic police.
It was also decided in the meeting that speed limits would be fixed on certain roads in the city by the RTA and secretary RTA in consultation with the transport and communication department, traffic police and other civic bodies.
