Concern on polio cases in Larkana

LARKANA: MNA and Chairperson of the Provincial Oversight Task Force for polio Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho said on Thursday that detection of two polio cases in Larkana Division had put a challenge to our task forces striving to eradicate crippling various, adding that situation demanded a Union Councils-wise specific strategy under the Nation Emergency Plan.

She was addressing a meeting of the Divisional Task Force Larkana held here this evening at the Commissioner’s office; the meeting was attended among others by the Prime Minister’s focal person for Polio, Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq, NEOC Co-coordinator, Dr. Rana Mohammad Safdar, former Federal Education Minister Shahnaz Wazeer Ali, representatives of WHO, UNICEF, civil society organizations striving to eradicate polio, the Divisional Commissioner Larkana, the Deputy Commissioners of Larkana, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Kashmore @ Kandhkot, Kamber-Shahdadkot and DHO of these districts.

The meeting was informed that two positive case of polio virus had recently been detected in the Larkana division and there were 10 union councils which were low-performing and in order to control the crippling virus, integrated efforts were needed by the task force striving at the federal, provincial, division and down to the district level.

The meeting was also informed that tribal system and non-availability of female staff were additional factors having impact on the campaign in Larkana division while other impediments like security situation etc were identical like in other parts of the country; the meeting was informed that tribal factor was influencing the Union Councils bordering the Baluchistan province in the division.

The meeting, through a power point presentation, was apprised on the achievements as well as impediments confronted in three rounds up launched in the division since January of this year. The meeting was informed that a probe had proved that no polio team had received threat in any part of Kashmore-Kandhkot district. The meeting was further informed that in order to stipulate accurate target of children under 5-year age, a survey of women having pregnancies was also being carried out.

Dr. Pechuho directed the Deputy Commissioners and the DHOs to monitor the situation at the grass root level by having meetings with the field staff and other stakeholders at a regular interval; she underlined importance of training to the field staff and utilization of precarious financial resources with accountability. She assured that provincial government would continue to extend full support by providing financial and other requirements of the Divisional Task Force.

The Prime Minister’s focal person, Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq in her address said that Pakistan was poised to get rid of the crippling virus and get its name of out of Somalia, Nigeria and such other countries provided a collective crusade is waged by the Federal, Provincial, Divisional and District Task Forces; she underlined a mechanism for a candid assessment of the situation on ground and area-specific strategy and also consistency in the approach.

Divisional Commissioner Larkana Ghulam Akbar Laghari said that the district administration had assigned a top priority to polio eradication, adding that the Federal and Provincial Task Forces would be updated on achievements, impediments and lesson learnt from every round launched.
