KARACHI: A week-long Consumer Rights Awareness Campaign in connection of World Consumer Day 2016 was launched on Wednesday with ribbon cutting ceremony by Coordinator to Chief Minister Sindh Fareed Ansari.

This campaign is launched by Consumer Rights Protection Council of Pakistan (CRPC) to make consumers aware of their rights and information about healthy and certified products. Anjuman-e-Tajiran Empress Market Saddar and local administrations are supporting this ceremony. As part of campaign, several consumer activities in various markets and seminars in educational institutions will be held.

Chairman CRPC Shakil Baig, President Anjuman-e-Tajiran Empress Market Saddar Liaquat Ali, President All Empress Market Iqbal Kakar, Assistant Commissioner Saddar Sajjad Abro and others also spoke.

Addressing inaugural ceremony Fareed Ansari lauded efforts to create consumer awareness about their rights and responsibilities. Consumers are deprived of their rights. Utilities especially KE is over billing and minting money while paying no heed to consumer’s hue and cry, he criticized.

Every one is a consumer in much of cases. Media is also playing key role in educating consumers and i suggest they should start a dedicated bulletin to address their issues. Consumers are suffering due to negligence of utilities, he said.

Shakil Baig said that this week-long campaign will convey consumer rights awareness messages directly to more than 5000 citizens and millions through mass media. In majority of countries consumers are provided with their rights and given due respect considering their suggestions. But unfortunately consumers are deprived of their rights here in Pakistan despite being exploited by companies and utilities. They are victim of profiteering and most of times get poor quality items, he added. He also demanded to constitute consumer courts to address their issues.

Assistant Commissioner Saddar Sajjad Abro lauded efforts of CRPC and assured administration support for this cause.
