Contingency plans devised to meet rain emergency in Karachi

KARACHI: A high-level meeting to review the arrangements made for the expected rains in Karachi was held under the chairmanship of Commissioner Karachi Shaoib Ahmed Siddiqui at his office.

All local body agencies, including Karachi Municipal Corporation, all District Municipal Corporations (DMC) and Cantonment Boards briefed about the rain emergency arrangements finalized by them to the meeting. The senior officers who attended the meeting told that they had finalized contingency plans to meet challenges of rain emergency during expected rains in the city.

The meeting reviewed the contingency plans prepared by the civic agencies. Officers of KMC, DMCs and Cantonment Boards delivered presentations on their plans and assured the meeting that they were fully prepared to meet the challenges of the rain emergency.

It was also told the meeting that storm water drains had been cleaned and would hopefully drain smoothly the rain water as planned.

All deputy commissioners and the senior officials of relevant civic agencies, including KMC, DMCs, Water and Sewerage Board and social welfare departments attended the meeting and assured that they had prepared their contingency plans to meet the challenges of rains.

They also informed the meeting the Cleaning work of storm-water drains hadalso been completed. It was decided in the meeting that Water and Sewerage Board would ensure that no manhole was left opened in the city.

The commissioner asked the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board to check all manholes in the city and ensure that all were covered properly. In this connection, the meeting decided that all dputy commissioners would coordinate with the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and supervise the work to be carried out by them for covering the manholes.

He directed the officials to be alert to perform their duties to meet the challenges of rain emergency. He said that Governor of Sindh and Chief Minister Sindh wanted serious and extraordinary efforts to be taken by all concerned agencies and departments to meet the challenges of rain emergency.

The commissioner told that there should not be any negligence on part of all responsible and concerned organizations. No negligence will be tolerated in this regard.

The commissioner further said all relevant officials should be alert and ensure that no roads get inundated and the people should not suffer during rains. He advised the officials to keep monitoring the arrangements made for the rain emergency so that you can improve the arrangement and remove the shortcoming or lapse if any found.

The meeting also formed District Disaster Management Committees on the directive of government of Sindh to make arrangement for the rehabilitation of affected people during expected rains. It was decided that all deputy commissioners would form the district disaster management committees in their respective districts.

It was also decided that social welfare departments and representatives of the chamber of commerce and industry would also be inducted and incorporated in the committees to carryout rehabilitation work under the supervision of respective deputy commissioners.

The meeting was attended by the Additional Commissioner Karachi Aslam Khoso, all deputy commissioners, all administrators of DMCs and others.
