KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has announced to hold Inter District Girls Sports Festival from December 16th to 19th, in which girls from government and private schools as well as medrassahs would participate. Around 800 entries have yet been received in this regard.

While speaking during a press briefing on Thursday at KMC Officers Club, Administrator Karachi Rauf Akhter Farooqui said the vision behind organizing the event was to provide females, who were usually a deprived gender in our society, a healthy recreational activity.

Besides KMC schools, girls from private schools, Sindh Government schools and even from registered maderesahs were allowed to take part in this event, he added.

“No such event could be organized in last 20 years in the city in which females had participated or registered for participation in such a big number and it is an honour for me that the event was being organized during my tenure,” the administrator said.

Farooqui said after the girls sports festival, another such event would be organized for boys as well. The sole aim was encouraging extracurricular activities in educational institutions of the city.

Replying a query, he also acknowledged that the recovery situation of KMC was very bad otherwise it could generate an enormous amount that could not only fulfil KMC needs but also provide funds to government.

Advisor to Administrator for sports and education, Brigadier (R) A.S Nasir later gave a detailed briefing on the sports festival. He said sports competitions among girls in various disciplines were planned to be held in the National Coaching Centre, KMC Sports Complex, Mini Sports Complex, TMC Ground Gulberg and in the Women Sports Complex in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

He said funds would not be taken from government for all the expenditures but donors and private companies would be contacted for this. He said funds were also being raised to provide track suits to the teams participating in the festivals as it had been learnt that girls of government schools and many madrasahs could not afford sports cloths.

Nasir said KMC wanted the festival to get full and proper exposure and prove to be the most successful girls sports festival ever held in Karachi.

He said the elimination rounds for various competitions would start on 11th December at the National Coaching Centre and the team which secured first or second position would get the prizes. The teacher’s race in 100 meter competition would be held on 16th December.

Senior Director CSR Rehan Khan and other officers were also present on this occasion.
