Developing emergency traffic management plan for Peshawar urgedJune 3, 2015
Peshawar: Experts have urged the need of devising an efficient traffic plan for effective emergency traffic management in Peshawar to maximize the utilization of the transportation system and minimize fatalities and losses in case of any emergency situation.
This was the crux of the one day workshop on “Emergency Traffic Management Plan” organized by Urban Policy & Planning Unit (UPU), P&D Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in collaboration with USAID Peshawar.
The workshop was arranged to evalue a strategy for handling traffic during emergency situations in Peshawar city to ensure smooth flow of traffic. Representatives from public sector departments and private welfare organizations participated in the workshop.
While welcoming the participants, the Executive Director, UPU, Taseer Jamal Alizai said that the basic aim of conducting the workshop was to take on board all the stakeholders, including administrative departments, Private sector organizations and academia to deliberate on finding ways for efficient coordination and sharing information for a quick response during emergency situations.
SSP Traffic Police Peshawar, Capt. Wahid Mahmood, Dr. Naveed, Assistant Professor, UET Taxila, Dr. Jawad, Assistant Professor, Dr. Imran Hafeez, Associate Professor, UET Taxila, Mr. Waseem Khan, Emergency Officer, Rescue 1122, Peshawar highlighted various aspects of the proposed emergency traffic management in the workshop.
SSP Traffic Police Peshawar informed the participants that due to inadequate urban transport system the city was facing several traffic issues that was putting huge pressure on the existing transport infrastructure.
He highlighted that huge number of unregistered taxis/ rickshaws, lack of parking facilities in Commercial/non-commercial areas, encroachments, lack awareness of traffic rules, poor implementation and security checkpoints have aggravated traffic problems in the provincial metropolis.
Various groups,comprising the participants, after brainstorming efforts on different aspects of emergency traffic management, put forth recommendations for the preparation of an Emergency Traffic Management Plan for Peshawar city.
Executive Director UPU, in his concluding remarks hoped that the exercise would prove beneficial for devising a comprehensive Emergency Traffic Plan for the city.
