Development works on Torkham border halted after Afghan protest

Peshawar: Development work regarding construction of terminal at Torkham border was stopped when the Afghan authorities protested against it on Saturday here at Torkham border, official and local sources said.

The sources said, the Pakistani authorities have launched construction works on mega project of building terminal in Torkham. Pursuing the plan, the Pak officials setting up pedestrians’ pavements on the border to regularize walkers’ movement on the border, sources said.

Last day the Afghan officials raised objection on it and after exchange of hard words between the two border security forces, the Afghan officials suspended the sharing border and asked the Pakistani authorities to forthwith halt work on the up-lift plan, sources said.

The Afghan officials were of the view that agreements have been signed between Pakistan and Afghanistan avoiding the construction works in 30 meters near the border, sources said.

The Pak border security officials stopped works on the establishment of the fences after dialogue of the both countries took place in Torkham that released the tension, sources said. The border was closed for every kind of movement after half an hour it was resumed, sources said.

It is to be mentioned here than in past the Afghan border security forces have not let Pakistan officials to install gate on the border to manage the pedestrians’ movement properly.
