Diabetes: Foot amputations are 85% preventable: expert

Karachi: Chairman Pakistan Working Group on Diabetic Foot (PWGDF) Prof Abdul Basit on Thursday said foot amputations are 85 percent preventable through precautionary measures.

He informed this while addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club. General Secretary PWGDF Dr Zahid Miyan, Dr Zafar Iqbal Abbasi and others were also present on this occasion. He said PWGDF with the collaboration of Baqai Institute of Diabetology and Endocrinology was organizing a symposium on “Diabetic Foot” at local hotel which would start from 22 to 24 August 2014.

The inauguration ceremony of symposium will be held on 22 August 2014. Around 300 health practitioners are expected to participate in the three-day symposium.

Prof Abdul Basit said food complication are among the most serious and costly complications of diabetes. He said 115 diabetic foot clinics had been established across the country by Baqai Institute of Diabetology and Endocrinology for foot management and 1700 such more clinics were needed to be set up in the country. He said currently there were over 400,000 people with foot ulcers in the country.

He said unawareness, shortage of trained health care professionals and scarcity of foot care facilities are major causes of diabetes related leg amputations, 45-89% of which are preventable through timely and efficient foot care. He informed that PWGDF had been conducting countrywide training programs of young doctors.

Dr Zahid Miyan said objective of organizing the Diabetic Foot symposium is to discuss the current practices in diabetic foot management, to provide hands-on skills to the participants and to share the value experiences. The training will encompass wide horizon of diabetic foot problems including prevention and early diagnosis, clinical & surgical management and recent advances in targeted therapies for diabetic.

Dr Zafar Iqbal Abbasi said symposium is a major scientific event on diabetic foot care and event would be a great learning opportunity for doctors, family physicians and health care professionals.
