DUHS organizes workshop on molecular, immunodiagnostics

Karachi: Dow University of Health Sciences(DUHS) in collaboration with American Society for Microbiology and Pakistan Society for Microbiology organized training workshop on ‘Molecular and Immunodiagnostics’ giving its participants three days packed with impressive scientific lectures and intensive hands-on workshop covering various aspects in Histopathology, Molecular Pathology and Microbiology.

Participants from all over the country from cities like Gilgit, Peshawar, Haripur, Khairpur, Mansehra, Islamabad, Larkana, Sargodha, Lahore, Quetta, Karachi etc participated in the event. The workshop also witnessed participation from Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Canada, and Qatar and hence could be deemed as an international workshop. Most of the participants came from outside the city were awarded travel grant with the support of American Society for Microbiology.

The first day comprised inauguration ceremony where participants were introduced to the upcoming events of the workshop. The chief guest was pride of Pakistan and world renowned scientist Prof  Dr Atta-ur-Rehman not only offered his words of wisdom but also gave a presentation on Wondrous World of Science. At the end of the inaugural session the honourable Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Umer Farooq welcomed the participants particular those who came from abroad and from outside the city, he also appreciated the organizing secretary Dr Saeed Khan and his whole team for excellent arrangements for the workshop.

Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi and Dr Asif Qureshi delivered lectors who covered various aspects and importance of immunodiagnostics. Next, all the participants were taken to the histopathology section where they were shown each and every step from sample receiving, processing to its reporting. Techniques explaining grossing, tissue processing, embedding, cutting and H&E staining were demonstrated. Microscopy in order to differentiate between tumour and non-tumour cells on morphological basis was also explained.

Second day offered lectures by Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi who delivered talk on diagnostics in the control of infectious diseases. This was followed by lectures by Dr Talat Rome on signal transduction and key regulators of immune system and Dr Samreen Soomro on diagnostic techniques used in microbiology department. This was followed by hands on training session at the department of molecular pathology and microbiology.

At the department of molecular pathology participants were introduced to operation and principles of various state of the art automations present at the department and were also taught manual extraction, PCR and result analysis through electrophoresis. Whereas at the department of microbiology they were taught various processes involved in urine DR etc. But science was not the only attraction here.

On the third and final day of the workshop, Dr Shaheen Sharafat and Dr Saeed Khan delivered lectures on pathogenesis of parasitic infections and advancement in molecular diagnostic techniques respectively. The day was concluded by an impressive concluding ceremony in which participants and organizers were awarded with certificates and the lecturers were awarded shield as vote of thanks.

Participants from different cities shared their views about the hands-on training workshop and their stay in Karachi.

Abida Raza from Islamabad (NOORI) said that she did not only learned a lot from the workshop but was also thrilled with the arrangements of tea and lunch sessions and was highly impressed by various automations present at the department of molecular pathology. Dr Niaz Hasan from Baluchistan thanked DUHS, ASM and PSM for arranging the event and highly appreciated the set up and was glad that he got an exposure to various modern diagnostic techniques.

It was a joint venture of DUHS with American Society for Microbiology and Pakistan Society for Microbiology.
