Islamabad: A meeting was held in the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training to oversee the overall performance of Allama Iqbal Open University, particularly in Bahawalpur District.
The meeting was chaired by Muhammad Baligh Ur Rehman, Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training and Pro-Chancellor of AIOU.
The meeting was attended the Vice Chancellor and along with senior officers of Allama Iqbal Open University and the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training.
Dr. Ali Asghar Chishti, Vice Chancellor AIOU briefed the participants about the working of the University with particular reference to its activities in Bahawalpur District.
He informed that the new Regional Campus of Allama Iqbal Open University is complete and ready for inauguration in Bahawalpur. Moreover, the proposals to establish a Renewable Energy Institute and hostels for the students particularly girls, in the premises of the Regional Center at Bahawalpur were discussed.
The Minister of State appreciated the overall performance of the University and directed the senior management to develop short (2018), medium (2025) and long term (2050) visions of the University with specific targets and timelines.
He further desired that AIOU must strive to become the leading university in distant learning and develop collaborations with other similar universities in Pakistan as well as in other countries to develop innovative learning strategies and new prgrammes.
He directed that an expert group be created to introduce and expand the Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCS) in Allama Iqbal Open University on the pattern of similar courses offered by some of the leading universities in the world.
He also directed that AIOU should open its regional campuses/study centers at all district headquarters without further delay.
In the absence of own land/building/resources, these centers should be opened in rented buildings. He emphasized that preference should be given to less developed areas of Pakistan including South Punjab, Balochistan and Rural Sindh.
