Karachi: Teach for Pakistan, initiative of Aman Foundation, held its annual reception here at a local hotel on Tuesday evening to bring together multiple stakeholders to help enable quality education for students across Pakistan.

Addressing the ceremony, CEO Aman Foundation, Ahsan Jamil, said that education should never be linked to socio-economic backgrounds. He went on saying that majority of children are denied education that prepares them for success in an increasingly competitive world. Education system still haunts disadvantaged students, he said.

On the occasion, Ms. Wendy Kopp, Founder of Teach for America, and Founder and CEO of Teach For All, remarked that Pakistan faces extreme educational poverty.

The speakers criticized the role of government educational institutes for their inactive role in improving education and said that the government policies are taking away the opportunities from underprivileged students.

CEO Teach for Pakistan, Ms Noor Masood, said. “Initially in 2010, most of us were not expecting that students graduating from top universities will come to teach students in government schools but a large number of students supported our program and proved to be more devoted than us, providing the students of the government schools with quality education”, she added.

During question answer session, Secretary Education Sindh Fazal Pechuho told PPI on the occasion that he had set apart the management department from teaching department in all educational institutes of the province.

Moreover, he said that he had introduced online technology for Intermediate admissions on basis of merit. “The admission proceedings are made transparent through official website and students securing considerable marks secure a seat in a better college with multiple options,” he stated.

Jamil answered the various questions raised by PPI regarding the culture and language diversity. He responded that his organization conducts five week training for newly recruited teachers where they train them regarding issues associated with languages, culture, norms and values of certain places where they would teach.
