First polio case of year detected in Karachi

KARACHI: First polio case of the year in Karachi has been confirmed in 18-month old girl, raising the number of confirmed polio cases to 5 in Sindh province since January 2015, health officials said on Thursday.

Sources said polio case has been confirmed in 18-month Maryam daughter of Naimatullah, resident of Shafiq Colony, Union Council-8 of Gulberg Town adjacent to Machhar Colony near Sohrab Goth. The girl belongs to Mahsud tribe, originally hailing from Waziristan.

They said as per the presented history of girl, she has been suffering from high grade fever, weakness in both lower limbs but more severe on right side after intra muscular injection on both side of buttocks.

The vaccination status zero routine SIAs two doses (one year back according to mother), and no recent dose, as family had refused vaccination and hid their children.

A total five polio cases had been reported across the Sindh province so far out; two from Dadu, one each from Karachi, Sukkur and Kambar-Shahdadkot.
