FO: (PM to meet Modi on sidelines of SCO summit today)

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will hold bilateral meeting with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the SCO summit at Ufa, Russia today (Friday).

This was confirmed by Foreign Office Spokesperson Qazi Khalilullah at his weekly news briefing here on Thursday. The spokesperson said all issues of importance will be discussed during the meeting.

He expressed the confidence that the meeting between the two leaders will have positive impact on bilateral relations. To a question, the spokesperson said Pakistan is against any sort of proxy war and desires good neighborly relations. We want to resolve all disputes through talks.

Qazi Khalilullah said the prime minister will also hold meetings with the Presidents of Russia, China and Afghanistan. He said Pakistan is interested to enhance relations with Russia and the meeting between the prime minister and the Russian president will provide fresh impetus to the on-going cooperation.

As regards the grant of full SCO membership to Pakistan, the spokesperson hoped that our membership will be approved in principle at the Summit meeting. To a question about talks between the Afghan government and Taliban, the spokesperson Pakistan played the role of facilitator in the talks.

He termed the talks as a breakthrough saying this is for the first time that the two sides have direct talks. He said the atmosphere of talks was cordial and both the sides agreed to meet again after Ramadan.

He said the two sides have expressed interest of building peace in Afghanistan. He said important countries are supporting this peace process, which is in everybody’s interest especially for the peoples of the region.

He said Pakistan is committed to supporting an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process. To a question about the arrest of defense analyst Zaid Hamid in Saudi Arabia, Qazi Khalilullah said our embassy has requested the Saudi authorities for consular access to the arrested analyst and provide information about the charges leveled against him and confirm the reports of his sentence.
