Golf championship concludes

KARACHI: The 6th Independence Day Cup Open Golf Championship 2014 concluded at Defence Authority Country & Golf Club here on Sunday evening with Shabbir Iqbal of Islamabad Golf Club (IGC) winning the coveted trophy of the high profile DHA tournament. Comd 5 Corps and President Executive Board, DHA Lt. Gen Sajjad Ghani was the chief guest. Administrator DHA, Brig Muhammad Abdullah received the chief guest on his arrival at DA Country & Golf Club.

The prestigious 4 days Golf Tournament was played in pleasant and challenging playing conditions at the newly refurbished golf course of DHA Golf Club. 80 top professionals and a number of senior professionals and amateurs from all over the country participated in the tournament. The 2 million prized tournament of Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF) was co-sponsored by Admore Gas (Pvt) Ltd.

The prize distribution ceremony was held at the conclusion of the tournament in which Comd 5 Corps and President Executive Board, DHA Lt. Gen Sajjad Ghani distributed prizes to the winners and awarded cash prizes to the top 40 professionals.

Lt. Gen Sajjad Ghani said that golfing was healthy and lively activity and should be promoted in the country. He congratulated PGF & DA Golf Club management for organizing the premier event of the country in a professional and befitting manner. He hoped that more such tournaments of national stature would be held in DHA Golf Club in future.

Shabbir Iqbal of Islamabad Golf Club (IGC) clinched the professional title by finishing with an aggregate score of 209, Shafiq Masih of Lahore GYM runners up with a score of 212. Muhammad Munir of Islamabad Golf Club (IGC) and Imdad Hussain of Lahore Garrison Golf Club (LGGC) bagged the third position with score of 214 jointly. In the amateur (Gross) category, Zohaib Asif (aggregate score 215) of DHA Golf Club emerged as the best amateur (gross), Muhammad Rehman of Royal Palm Golf Club (RPGC) 223 got the second position and Ghazanfar Mehmood (Bahria Golf Club Rawalpindi) 226 bagged the third position. In the amateur (Net) category, Zulfiqar Ali (215 NET) of the Multan Golf Club (MGC) emerged as the best amateur (Net), Muhammad Zubair of Karachi Golf Club (217 Net) got the second position and Khalid Mehmood of Rawalpindi Golf Club (218 Net) bagged the third position.

In the senior professionals Hassan Akbar of Arabian Sea Country Club (ASCC) captured the top position with the total aggregate of 71 while Ghani Khan of Karachi Golf Club ended up as the runner up with the aggregate score of 73. Akhtar Ali of Lahore GYM, Saleem Inayat of Karachi Golf Club and Iftikhar Ahmed of Lahore GYM came third with a score of 74 jointly.

Shabbir Iqbal collected a glittering trophy and a cash award of Rs. 248,710. A large number of golf lovers and participants golfers of the tournament attended the ceremony.
