Habib University organises 2nd Annual Postcolonial Higher Education ConferenceOctober 19, 2014
KARACHI: Habib University, a first of its kind Liberal Arts and Sciences institute of Pakistan, is to organise the Second Annual Postcolonial Higher Education Conference, from October 25, 2014 at the Habib University auditorium.
The aim is to gather global scholars, thinkers, activists and writers to reflect on the current situation of higher education. Prof. Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, one of the world’s foremost postcolonial thinker, will be the keynote speaker at this conference.
¬This conference is in line with Habib University’s mission of creating awareness about Liberal Arts education and broadening the possibilities for higher education in Pakistan. The conference will be a platform to discuss the direction and goals of higher education, to fill in the gap created by the anti-colonial nationalists by limiting the scope of studies, particularly that of humanities and social sciences. It is because the knowledge of these subjects embedded a profound connection with local contexts, cultures, histories and languages, which were considered an impediment to modernization and development.
Speaking of this event, Nauman Naqvi, Acting Dean & Founding Faculty at Habib University, School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, said “It is important to understand the history and culture of our ancestors in order to become caring and critically-conscious members of the society. Through this conference, we aim to broaden the horizons of our students’ by enriching their minds with exchange of ideas and discussions that develop critical thinking for the betterment of the society.”
The keynote speaker of this conference, Prof. Gayatri Chakravorty, will be addressing the current scenario of higher education in the subcontinent. Ms. Chakravorty is a University Professor at Columbia University, who has also worked for feminism across the spectrum and beyond a single issue. She has authored several books and her latest includes Other Asias and An Aesthetic Education in An Era of Globalization. Other speakers include Dr Nadeem Omar Tarar, Dr. Nukhbah Langah, Dr. Syed Nomanul Haq, Prof. Vibodh Parthasarathi and Dr. Nasir Abbas Nayyar.
