Karachi: Health Experts on Monday warmly welcomed that launching of a vigorous crackdown against 60,000 quack doctors across Karachi city and constitution of task force for evolving strategy in this regard by Commissioner Karachi.
Talking to PPI, President Pakistan Paediatric Association (PPA) Centre Prof Dr Iqbal Memon welcomed the decision of Commissioner Karachi for launching massive crackdown against quack doctors in the city but quickly added that crackdown should be started earlier as medical community had been demanding strict action against phony doctors since long.
He said non-qualified doctors were playing with health and lives of citizens since long and silence of authorities concerned in this issue was matter of grave concern. He said quack doctors were posing serious threats to society and illegal practices of non-qualified doctors must be eliminated not only from Karachi but also from other parts of country.
Prof Memon said quackery had major contribution to increasing number deaths and raising infections among patients in the society. He said action against non-qualified doctors should be launched with honesty, while circle of action against quacks should also be extended across the country.
He suggested the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) administration to establish clinics in slums areas of Karachi to ensure better health delivery system in the metropolis.
Senior member of Pakistan Medical Association Centre Dr SM Qaiser Sajjad informed that around 650,000 quack doctors were playing with the lives of nation across the country, while 60,000 to 70,000 were involved in this illegal practice in Karachi.
He said a special committee was also working under supervision of PMA against quack doctors in the city. He stressed the need for increasing level of registration of doctors in order to root out quackery. He said registration of doctors would help reduce the menace of non-qualified doctors from the country.
President PMA Karachi Dr Idress Edhi stressed the need for implementation of Health Commission Bill to eliminate quack doctors. He said PMA always raised voice for patient rights. He said doctors running clinics and private hospitals without registration should not be allowed to do so.
He said accountability of doctors running the clinics and owners of private hospitals should be ensured to protect the patients and doctor rights in the society.
It was pertinent to mention here that Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui had constituted a Task Force to launch vigorous crackdown against quack doctors across the city in a meeting held recently. The task force comprises the representatives of KMC administration, health department officials, PMA and commissioner youth team.
