KARACHI: Secretary Health Sindh Iftikhar Shalwani directed the officials to ensure Impalement of Non Smoker Ordinance 2002 at public places across the Sindh province in true letter and spirit.

The Secretary Health has written letters to all DIG’s of divisions, all SSP’s of all districts, all commissioners of divisions, all deputy commissioners of all districts, all vice chancellors of public / private sector universities, directors colleges / schools and principals of all medical colleges that the Federal Government has promulgated Protection of Non Smoker Ordinance 2002, which is in vogue and rules have been framed to implement anti-smoking law but unfortunately the said ordinance is not being implemented in true letter and spirit.

In letter, he directed the officials to take all necessary steps for implementation of said ordinance through police and law enforcement agencies to ensure that smoking at public places may not take place and cigarette sale is prohibited below the age of 18 years and no sale is allowed near to educational institutions.

In this regard, special attention may be given to the uses of Sheesha Smoking by the public at various places like all hotels, including five star hotels, all restaurants, cafes, cyber cafes, parks and picnic points etc.

This is a top priority public health issue to prevent passive smoking and may be treated as most urgent public health matter.
