KARACHI: Intercity public transporters respond positively on the call of Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui on Thursday not to increase fares on intercity bus services on the occasion of Eid.

“Eid-ul-Fitr is fast approaching; people will go to meet their loved ones on this occasion. Being commissioner Karachi, I appeal from you to charge fares according to the government fixed rates,” he said.

He said his approach had always been appealing. Special occasions had distinguished importance and people wanted to spend those moments among their kith and kin. Therefore, it was requested from intercity bus owners to strictly follow the official rates and do not give the city administration any chance to take action against them.

“Fares will be returned from the bus owners charging excessive or double fare and fines will be imposed on them. A complaint center will be set up on Sohrab Goth road, comprising staff of Regional Transport Authority (RTA) and traffic police. Apart from that complaint center, the citizens can also make complaint at Commissioner Karachi Complaint Room contact number 021-99203443 and toll free number 1299,” he said.

Siddiqui said in case of any complaint the citizens should inform the authorities through these means.

Bus owners and their representatives present on the occasion assured their cooperation to stick to the government fixed rates, however they demanded rise in fare after Eid for which the commissioner said another meeting would be held after Eid with the concerned authorities to discuss the matter further.

President Sindh Air-conditioned Bus Owners Association Malik Riaz Awan said that no overcharging would be made on the occasion of Eid.

Secretary RTA Manshad Ali Shahani, SSP Motorway Police Shokat Ali Khatyan, secretary Provincial Transport Authority, Assistant Commissioner Saddar Sajjad Abro, SSP Traffic Capt (r) Faisal Chachar and other relevant officers were also present on the occasion.
