Islamabad: Deputy Speaker National Assembly Murtaza Javed Abbasi has directed M/o Interior to ensure foolproof Security of the Parliament House and observed that Islamabad Police has failed to stop the intrusion of protestors on four different occasions in the premises of the Parliament House.

He was chairing a meeting of the Standing Committee on House and Library in Parliament House, Islamabad.

The Deputy Speaker said that there was no resistance from the police personnel to stop the Protestors to break into the precincts of Parliament House. He termed it sheer negligence of the Islamabad Police whereby sanctity of the Parliament was compromised.

He directed Islamabad Police to strictly implement zero tolerance policy of M/o Interior in terms of protests in the Red Zone and no one should be allowed to cross the threshold. He also directed M/o Interior to submit reports of incidents happened earlier and earmark space for protests in future.

The Additional Secretary M/o Interior and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Capital Territory admitted the failure of Police on 23rd May’s incident. The Chief Commissioner apprised the Committee that seven police personnel have been suspended on the preliminary investigation report and action against other negligent officers would be taken on conclusion of the Judicial Inquiry.

The Additional Secretary further informed the Committee that M/o Interior was committed to make the security of Islamabad specially the Red Zone, impeccable by deployment of extra police personnel, intensifying surveillance by Security Agencies and installation of extra surveillance cameras.

While discussing the matters pertaining to construction of additional family suites and servant quarters for Parliamentarians and their staff, the Deputy Speaker lamented the lethargy of CDA to get the work done within stipulated time.

He warned the CDA and the contractor to complete the construction work within timeline. He said that the National Assembly Secretariat has to face embarrassment when Members approach for provision of accommodation. He also noted with concern the continuous absence of Chairman CDA from the meetings of the Committee terming it a breach of privilege of the Parliament and the Committee.

The Director General (Works), CDA apprised the committee about the update on the Construction work. He admitted the negligence of his department saying that the construction of additional block should have been completed within the timeline however; still 68% work was still pending. He assured the committee that work would be expedited for early its completion.

The Deputy Speaker directed the CDA to submit a comprehensive report on the issue to the Secretariat within 24 hours. He also directed for issuance of work orders to the contractor assigned the contract for supply of furniture for the Parliament Lodges despite release of required funds by the M/o Finance.

The meeting was attended by MNAs Molana Qamar ud Din, Dr. Ibadullah, Mrs. Shahida Rehmani, Additional Secretary (A) National Assembly, Additional Secretary M/o Interior, Chief Commissioner ICT, Senior Officers of CDA, ICT Police and District Administration.
