LAHORE: Secretary General, Jamaat e Islami, Liaqat Baloch, has said that the problem of load shedding could not be solved without improvement and extension of the transmission system.

Speaking at an Iftar dinner in the city, he said that the total generation capacity of the country was 22 Megawatt, however, the transmission system could not supply more than 15 Megawatts. He said the transmission lines had not been renovated or extended during the last 20 years, and added that the PML(N), the PPP, Pervez Musharraf and the PML(Q) were responsible for the situation.

Therefore, the assurances of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Water and Power to overcome load shedding were hollow. Besides, he said, that sub standard transformers and electricity theft were adding to the problems.

Liaqat Baloch said that solid proposals for amendments in the budget had been made in the Senate and the government could provide relief to the public by accepting these.

He said that even before the approval of the budget, the government was talking of raise in the POL prices, and warned that this would render the budget meaningless, and lead to a fresh price escalation.

The JI Secretary General slated the crackdown in the markets and arrests of retailers besides the insulting behavior of the police to the traders. He said that the price control should be on the wholesale markets and not the common shopkeepers.
