Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi has decided to support the strike call of traders for September 9, 2015 against withholding tax on bank transactions.

JI Karachi Amir Engr. Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman demanded of the government to pay heed to the protesting traders, instead of crushing the national economy to please the International Monitory Fund (IMF).

In a statement on Monday, the JI leader said that the traders have resorted to protest as they have no other option left. He said that the regime is not willing to reduce their luxuries. He said the influential segments of the society, imperialists and landlords are free from any sort of taxes, while employees and patriotic traders pay their taxes. Even the government is bent to dub these tax payers as tax thieves, he added.

Engr. Naeem said that the ruling elite are quite unaware of the miseries of traders and other segments of the society, affected by the cruel withholding tax.

Referring to the report of the State Bank of Pakistan that cited 30 percent decrease in the bank deposits since introduction of the tax, he alleged that the government has been strengthening the black economy, instead of expanding legal tax net, through its illogical policies.

He was of the view that the country would have to face economic crisis like Greece, if the government does not change its policies.
