JICA kicks off routine immunization in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Peshawar: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Health Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in order to reduce the morbidity and mortality of vaccine preventable diseases jointly kicked-off a +ACI-Project for Strengthening Routine Immunization in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa+ACI-.

The captioned three year project (2014 to 2017) aims to contribute to the overall goal of the health department for improved health and wellbeing of the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and thereby improving health indicators such as infant mortality rate, childhood morbidity and mortality. The technical training will be organized for focal points of Expanded Programme for Immunization (EPI) and Lady Health Workers (LHWs), surveillance management, and cold chain and vaccine management. In Haripur and Manshera, capacity of social mobilization activities for the communities in the routine immunization and health in general will be held. Further, the capacity of monitoring activates of the routine immunization services shall also be strengthened in all the districts of the province.

Immunization is a proven strategy to control major childhood and communicable diseases. It protects infant from fatal diseases and their disabilities like Poliomyelitis, Measles, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis childhood TB, Influenza, Hepatitis, and Pneumonia. This project will help Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to achieve over 80+ACU- coverage of full immunization of children as compared to currently reported 53+ACU-.

JICA’s contribution for child health has been instrumental and for the assistance for Polio eradication initiative in Pakistan, since 1996 till present, the total grant assistance made by JICA to United Nations

Children’s Fund (UNICEF) comes up to approximately US+ACQ- 90.95 million and has accounted for about 22+ACU- of all oral polio vaccine procured so far. The 65 million US Dollars loan assistance for the polio eradication in Pakistan and routine immunization through technical cooperation project in Khyber Pkahtunkhwa (2006 to 2011) are some of the examples of commitment for child health.
