Jirga demands release of AafiaSeptember 21, 2015
KARACHI: The release of the daughter of the nation, Dr Aafia Siddiqui is necessary, said Aafia Movement convener Dr Fowzia Siddiqui, addressing an Aafia Release Jirga in front of Peshawar Press Club here Tuesday.
She said when the daughters of the nation are in the prisons of foreign powers the rulers keep a silence on this sensitive issue, it only strengthens the hands of our enemies. She said the day of 23rd September is the darkest day in the history of justice of the world when Aafia was handed a sentence of 86 years by a US judge Richard Barmen who is now called a Crazy by some former US lawmakers including Senator Hon Mike Gravel.
She said even the former attorney general of the United States of America Ramsey Clark had termed this sentence unjust and outrageous. However, at that time the then foreign minister of Pakistan Shah Mahmood Qureshi was joining glasses with Hillary Clinton just across the street from the court house.
Siddiqui said the imprisonment of the daughter of the nation in a foreign jail is a slap across the face of our national honour. She said all countries from India to Sudan take efforts for the repatriation of their prisoners from other countries. However, our rulers are not needy for the repatriation of the daughter of the nation. She said this is not a problem of an individual or a family but a matter related to the national honour.
She said that hundreds of people attending this Jirga have come here because they want their sister Dr Aafia Siddiqui back home. She said this Jirga appeals to the rulers and our national heroes, the defenders of this country, to play their role in repatriation of the daughter of the nation. She said we stand shoulder by shoulder with our brave army.
She appealed that Aafia must be repatriated to Pakistan so that we can live with a pride and honour. She said the politicians including the sitting rulers had promised release of Aafia during their election campaign but now two and half years have passed but the rulers are yet to fulfil their promise. She said she has been reminding the rulers of their promises for long but in vain. She said though the rulers have been playing a disappointing role, but the whole Pakistani nation is supporting the release of Aafia wholeheartedly.
A large number of social, political and tribal leaders attended the Jirga and extended their full support to the cause of Aafia release. Later, she visited the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Peshawar to inquire about the health of personnel of armed forces injured in the Badaber airbase terrorism. She said we stand shoulder by shoulder with our brave army. She said whole nation salute the brave soldiers.
However, Dr Fowzia appealed the prime minister of Pakistan, Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif to respect the sentiments of Pakistani nation and raise strong voice in the General Assembly of the United States for the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui.
