KMC decides regular monitoring of drain cleaning work

KARACHI: In a meeting chaired by the Commissioner Karachi/ Administrator Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui it was decided on Wednesday that district municipal corporations would arrange for cleaning of all the drains located in their remit, whereas KMC would besides monitoring also provide necessary machinery, vehicles and manpower for drain cleaning work.

Henceforth, a grade-17 officer of KMC will be deputed along other staff and required machinery on each stormwater drain and the drain cleaning process will continue throughout the year. Civil Aviation Authority will instead of draining rainwater from CAA to Sharea Faisal arrange for its drainage through Moria Khan nullah. All civic bodies will join hands for providing convenience to citizens, the meeting decided.

Earlier, the commissioner Karachi after taken notice of the closure of Chakor nullah due to the extension work of a residential scheme near Pehalwan Goth, issued directive for immediate stopping of work and said that the closure of Chakor nullah would create flood-like situation in the city and the areas of Pehalwan Goth, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Scheme-36, Bhitai Colony and other adjoining areas of Karachi Airport would be affected.

The meeting decided that a committee comprising director general technical services, senior director land and anti-encroachments and Chief Engineer Ibrahim Baloch will conduct a survey of the area and submit its report.

Metropolitan Commissioner Samiuddin Siddiqui, departmental heads of KMC, all district deputy commissioners and administrators, officers of Civil Aviation Authority, SITE Limited, K-Electric, KWSB and representatives of other civic organizations were also present on the occasion.

Administrator KMC expressed annoyance over carelessness of officers and warned that the time had crossed from making excuses and now it was time for work. Chief minister Sindh and minister for local government had given clear instructions about this and there must be no negligence in performing duties. The officers would have to face strict action on failure to comply with the orders and in such case they will have to lose their post also.

He also directed municipal services department to carry out full-fledged fumigation campaign in the city and work out daily schedule of drain cleaning and spray work. He said a monitoring committee had been setup for this purpose which would analyze all this to see if the work was going on or not.

Siddiqui also directed that strict action should be taken against encroachments and arrest all those involved in the new constructions on storm water drains.

Administrator Karachi also said that henceforth the concerned chief engineer would issue a proper certificate of the cleaning of storm water drain.
