KP govt approves a plan for rehabilitation of Budhani NullahJuly 27, 2015
Peshawar: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government has approved a comprehensive plan for rehabilitation of Budhani Nullah and protecting the surrounding populations from flood water. Under the plan, all encroachments on the Nullah will be removed and a protection wall on both sides of the water course will be constructed besides widening its water bed and expediting the pace of work on the two bridges being constructed on the Nullah. The cost of the project has been estimated at Rs. 734 million.
This approval was given at a high level emergency meeting held at the CM Secretariat Tuesday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pervez Khattak who also authorized the Deputy Commissioner, Peshawar to exercise the powers of the Chief Executive to deal with rescue and relief matters in case of flood or any other emergency.
The meeting was attended by the provincial Information Minister, Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani, Advisor to the Chief Minister for Communication and Works, Akbar Ayub, MPAs Mahmood Jan, Arbab Jehandad and Samiullah, Secretaries of C&W and Irrigation departments, Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Additional Deputy Commissioner, Peshawar, and other relevant officers.
Members of the community committee formed by the district administration also attended the meeting. They thanked the provincial government for carrying out immediate rescue and relief measures for the flood affected population.
The Deputy Commissioner had constituted the committee to seek cooperation of the local community for amicably resolving the issue of demarcation and removing encroachments from Budhani Nullah. On this occasion members of the committee also announced to demolish the CNG station and 26 houses built illegally on left bank of the Nullah.
Apprising the meeting of the latest situation of flood and encroachments as well original condition of the Nullah, the Deputy Commissioner Riaz Mahsood told that up to 45 feet encroachment on the right bank and 30 feet on the other side of 24.56 Kilometre long Budhani Nullah has been identified during the recent demarcation held on 24 July 2015 in presence of the local community.
He said that notices were issued for removal of 43 structures built on the encroached lands by 27 July 2015 but only three encroached had complied with the notice.
After having a detailed and serious review of the situation, the meeting decided to remove all encroachments from the Nullah without any compromise, concession or discrimination in the larger public interest and the rehabilitation and protection plan would be implemented in letter and spirit, it decided.
The Chief Minister Pervez Khattak made it clear that KP government was fully committed for removing encroachments to restore all water courses of the province in accordance with the original revenue record as the government as well as people of the province cannot afford the flood-generated devastations every year. He said that private property would also be acquired, if required, to widen the water courses.
Authorizing the Deputy Commissioner to exercise the powers of the Chief Minister in case of any disaster, Pervez Khattak directed the concerned departments to fully cooperate with the district administration for providing immediate relief to affected populations in emergencies.
On this occasion, the Chief Minister also ordered to reconstruct the collapsed causeway bridge of Kafoor Dheri and another bridge in PK-9 constituency.
Meanwhile in another meeting, held at CM Secretariat with Chief Minister Pervez Khattak in the chair on Tuesday, progress on JICA – the Japanese development agency – funded communication projects was reviewed. The meeting was told that more than 70 percent of the projects would be completed by the end of October next.
Expressing concern over delay on these projects and extended completion period, the Chief Minister directed the project authorities to ensure completion of all roads at the earliest so that JICA could be approached for initiating a new phase of the program.
