KARACHI: Senior Director Medical and Health Services Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Dr Salma Kausar held Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) responsible for Naegleria fowleri existence and said that if they had committed no negligence, the situation would have been different as the proper chlorination was the key to root out Naegleria.

Kausar said that most of the cases were reported in District East of the city, which showed that there was a clear lack of chlorination in that area. She told that at least 10 people have yet been killed due to the fever in different parts of Karachi, as per the record maintained by KMC.

The latest case in this connection has emerged out the other day in which a woman, Hina Ashfaq Motan, resident of Adam Jee Nagar, Ghazi Salahuddin Road, died of Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba, here in Agha Khan University Hospital.

She had been admitted for a few days in a critical situation and died later on. The brain-eating amoeba enters through the nose into brain and starts eating tissues.

Kausar said that 222 water samples out of 1800 were still unsatisfactory and posing threat for breeding of Naegleria fowleri.

“Recently, water sampling was done by a joint team of health department, water board and KMC. Out of 1800 samples, 1200 were declared satisfactory and 600 unsatisfactory. Then, the number of unsatisfactory samples was reduced to 300 and now only 222 samples have been witnessed unsatisfactory according to the most recent report,” she said.

She said that it was a responsibility of WSB to chlorinate the water supply to the city. Though, chlorination was being carried out at different points through different methods including liquid chlorination, however, KWSB needed to oversee the situation closely.

Kausar said that water tanks that were not cleaned regularly and properly were vulnerable of Naegleria.

She informed that the joint team would take more samples on Wednesday in order to avoid more deaths in this regard.
