KARACHI: Low attendance was observed in all major public-sector hospitals on Thursday owing to mourning day announced by Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) over death of their party worker in police custody.

Attendance at the out-patient departments of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, National Institute of Child Health, Civil Hospital Karachi, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Lyari General Hospital, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and other government healthcare institution remained low, mainly due to the unavailability of public transport.

The medical and diagnostic services in major healthcare centers also remained partially affected due to the low attendance of paramedical staff, nurses and doctors.

Absence of medical staff disturbed routine operations in some hospitals and dozens of scheduled surgeries were postponed; however, the emergency services remained fully functional.

An official from the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) said their OPDs opened as per schedule but the number of patients remained low due to shortage of public transport. He said emergency and OTs services in their healthcare were remained fully functional.
