KARACHI: Director General Technical Services Niaz Ahmed Soomro said on Thursday that working on the projects of Malir 15 and Malir Halt flyovers was going on smoothly and would be completed this year within the given timeframe.

“Our engineers and other staff are working hard to get the projects completed as soon as possible so that the citizens could get relief,” he said.

Soomro rejected the notion that the Malir flyover projects were unnecessarily being delayed because of sheer negligence and said that the flyovers were the only mega projects with Works and Services Department nowadays and the department was fully committed and successful as the structure was almost erected.

To a query, he said that as soon as Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) got the funds, it would start renovation of Jam Sadiq Bridge to facilitate industries of Korangi Industrial Area.

“Industries are backbone of the economy of the city which generates more than 70 per cent of revenue for all the country,” he said.

The DG told PPI that a proposal regarding flyover at Korangi crossing was sent to the relevant departments for approval, which was a much needed project for the smooth flow of traffic in the city.

“It is difficult for KMC to build such a long bridge from Qayyumabad to Korangi Crossing parallel to Jam Sadiq bridge in recent scenario because of shortage of funds that could bypass Malir River. However, it is understandable that during rainy season, the route could not be functional because of inundating roads. There is another fact that street lights could not be installed along the route as well,” he acknowledged.
