Mega blood donation camp to be held at Expo on 29th March

KARACHI: Help International Welfare Trust, a non-governmental organization, working in the field of social work and health sector is organizing a mega blood donation camp on theme ‘The Blood Donor Expo-2015’ on 29th March 2015 in Karachi to promote blood donation culture in Pakistan specially in the young segment of society.

This was announced by Media Director, Help International Welfare Trust, Syed Hasnain Rizvi while addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club on Tuesday. Group Executive Director & Spokesman Kamran Ahmed, Abdul Rauf Tabani, Aadil Khan, SM Asghar and others were also present.

Rizvi said team of Help International Welfare Trust has made plan to establish Pakistan’s largest blood donation camp at Expo Center and will try to collect 5000 blood bags on the day. The ceremony will start from 9:00am and continue to 9:00pm on 29th March. He said aim of organizing the mega blood donation camp is to raise awareness amongst general public about the blood donation. He said promoting voluntary blood donation culture is necessary in the country to overcome shortage of blood in hospitals and also providing transfusion facilities to thalassaemic children.

He said Iran and Italy have successfully controlled the thalassaemia prevalence in their respective countries through hectic efforts, adding if the authorities concerned work jointly we will also be able to make a thalassaemia-free Pakistan in near future. He said Sindh Prevention and Control of Thalassemia bill was passed from Sindh Assembly but unfortunately the law could not be enforced as yet.

He said thalassaemia is a genetic blood disorder prevalent in Pakistan as more than 5,000 babies are born with thalassemia disease every year, while 0.1million children have been living with thalassemia in the country. He said approximately 10 million people in our population who are thalassemia minor have ability to transfer thalssaemia major to their upcoming generation if they marry another carrier.

He said Help International Welfare Trust is providing free of cost treatment and blood transfusion facilities to 30 children. He said 90 percent people are ignorant about thalassaemia disease in the country.
