KARACHI: Taking exception to evasive report submitted by police on alleged detention of a missing man by law enforcers, the Sindh High Court (SHC) directed SSP concerned on Tuesday to look into the matter and submit a comprehensive report in it.

A division bench headed by Justice Ahmed Ali M Sheikh was hearing a petition filed by Alam Munir, seeking recovery of his brother Mehboob Munir.

The petitioner submitted that his brother Mehboob was picked up from Jacob Lines area in January 2014 by personnel of law-enforcement agencies and since then he was missing.

He told the judges that law enforcers had kept his brother in illegal detention and did not produce him in any court of law if he was involved in any case. He said that he approached the higher officials of LEAs for recovery of his brother but his plea fell on deaf ears. The court was requested to order LEAs to recover the detainee and produce him in the court.

During previous hearing, the court had ordered home secretary to constitute a joint investigation team to probe the allegations about detention and trace out the missing man.

In response to the court directions, police officer filed a progress report along with a JIT report in missing person case. After going through the report, the judges noted that an evasive report showing efforts made to trace out missing man has been filed to fulfil formalities. Besides, incomplete JIT report was submitted, it added. The court ordered, “In circumstance, SSP concerned is directed to look into the matter personally and file comprehensive report on next hearing.”

Meanwhile, the court while hearing another missing person case expressed its anger over indifferent response of Zia Arif Janjua, law officer of Rangers, in court and repeated notice to Rangers director general to depute a senior officer on next date.

The judges noted, “Arif seems to be somewhat reluctant to make his appearance before the court as and when he is called.”
