Karachi: Tree plantation drive during coming monsoon season would greatly help in making Karachi a green city; however, it needs taking redoubled efforts on part of the Sindh government forest department, and parks department of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

The need of an aggressive tree plantation was felt when about 2000 people died of sunstroke this summer in the city. The city has been continually witnessed hacking of trees to clear land for new housing schemes. Even some sparse mangrove forests along its coast have been gradually destroyed by the land mafia. The last major park established in Karachi was Safari Park in Gulshan e Iqbal that was developed some forty years ago.

There is vast land available for tree plantation along the banks of Lyari and Malir Nullahs as well as the long beach area. The provincial government, KMC, DHA and other stakeholders need not to miss the coming monsoon season and utilize it for plantation of millions of saplings to make the city greener in the interest of general public.
