Multi-pronged strategy to fight corruption

KARACHI: A newly appointed Chairman of Enquiries and Anticorruption Establishment Sindh, Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah said on Monday that a multi-pronged strategy, ensuring above-board accountability, cleansing Enquiries and Anti Corruption Establishment of corrupt officials and making prosecution and intelligence units more effective and responsive; punishing corrupt officials and rewarding the upright and honest; launching public awareness campaign, training and capacity building of all relevant officials, will be henceforth vigorously pursued in order to check and arrest the menace of financial corruption and corrupt practices prevalent in the Provincial Department.

He said this, while presiding over the first meeting of officials of the Department, held at his office.

Shah said the message must be loud and clear to all that accountability process would be above-board and carried out in a complete transparent manner, adding that officials of Anticorruption department must be upright and honest and no one can dare to raise finger upon their professional integrity and honesty and this principle would not be compromised.

He said officials would be held responsible for misdeed and corrupt practices by their sub-ordinate staff.

Newly chairman said that he would personally approach secretaries of provincial departments to furnish pertaining cases, adding that different types of corruption scandals and scams were being reported by the print and electronic media and Enquiries an Anticorruption Department will investigate financial corruption and corrupt practices prevalent in all provincial departments.

He said that he would hold meetings with the concerned departments in a view to make prosecution component and intelligent unit more effective and responsive to new challenges arising.

He his department is undergoing a major reshuffle in order to streamline it and achieve the stipulated goals.

Shah assured the officials to give them a free hand to take action in all the relevant matters, however, no one should be victimize, adding that a program aimed at training and capacity building of officials would soon be chalked out.

The meeting also reviewed position of the pending cases, process of prosecution, rate of conviction and other related matters.
