National Football Championship begins August 11

Karachi: The tenth edition of National Women Football Championship begins tomorrow (Monday) at four centers namely Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi.

A total of sixteen teams will be seen in action during the tournament including five women football club teams, which topped their respective groups in the recently concluded National Women Inter Club Football Championship.

The five club teams are Young Rising Star Women FC (Rawalpindi), Balochistan United Women FC (Quetta), Diya Women FC (Karachi), Model Town Women FC (Lahore) and Frontier College Women FC (Peshawar).

Apart from the four provincial teams, four regional women football teams namely Islamabad, FATA, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan will also participate in the tournament.

Three departmental teams – Army, WAPDA and HEC will also be seen in action during the championship. Young Rising Star will defend the title of the tournament.

The sixteen teams will be divided equally into four groups. Group league matches of these four groups will be played at Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi.

Top two teams from each group will advance to quarterfinals. The knockout rounds, which begin with quarterfinals, will be played in Lahore from August 23 to 31.

The top performers of the event will be picked for the Pakistan national women football team ahead of the upcoming 3rd SAFF Women Championship, which will be held in Pakistan in the month of November 2014.
